@dirge is it in Baltimore? We tried to go to the museum built from his house but the neighborhood was so atrocious we couldn't get out of the car

@dirge the tavern is a little over a mile from Fort Moultrie, where Poe was stationed when he was in the US Army before he became famous. Poe Avenue and the Edgar Allan Poe / Sullivan's Island branch of the Charleston County Library (itself housed in one of the former coastal defense batteries attached to Fort Moultrie) are also both close to the tavern, both named for Poe's time in this area. His time here in the Charleston vicinity also led Poe to mention the area in "The Gold-Bug" (which is directly set on Sullivan's Island), "The Oblong Box" and "The Balloon-Hoax". Poe's birth mother, who was a touring actress, also performed at the Dock Street Theater on the opposite side of the harbor, in Charleston.

(A few decades after Poe's time there, Fort Moultrie would be one of the locations around the harbor firing upon Fort Sumter, setting the first US civil war in motion.)
