Northwest ยท M
If you don't cook it right, it's kind of slimy and chewy. My great grandma is from the South, and I have her recipe. I make it every once in a while, and it's delicious. There's a Mediterranean recipe, that's fairly similar to eggplant Parmesan.
If you don't care about the fat content, then you deep fry the ocra in sunflower oil, until it's light brown. If you care about the calories, then put the okra on a cooking sheet, and spray with cooking spray. Bake/Broil in the oven, until it's light brown.
Cover the bottom of a baking dish with diced tomato (canned is fine), lay the cooked okra on top, then cover the top with more diced tomato. Cover with aluminum foil, and bake for one hour, at 375F. Remove from oven, put some sliced Italian cheese on top, cover again, bake for an additional 15 minutes.
Salt/Pepper to taste.

@Northwest: Wowza. Thank you for sharing an authentic southern recipe. From a great grandma too. ๐ค
Peaceful ยท F
I've had it a few different ways, fried is probably the best way to start out with it if you want to try it. I like it :)
SimplyTracie ยท 26-30, F
@Peaceful: It's less slimy when it's fried?
LadyWioness ยท 56-60, F
Ick. ๐
SimplyTracie ยท 26-30, F
@LadyWioness: Maybe try it fried like others have suggested.
LadyWioness ยท 56-60, F

It's good in gumbo too.
Bean17 ยท 51-55, F
I like fried okra but the best to me is hot pickled okra!๐ I don't like them stewed with tomatoes though because they get all slimy then.๐
SimplyTracie ยท 26-30, F
@Bean17: I think most people don't like the slime feeling
cherokeepatti ยท 61-69, F
Yes I live in Oklahoma, everyone here knows what okra is, a summer favorite.
SimplyTracie ยท 26-30, F
@cherokeepatti: Do you fry it?
cherokeepatti ยท 61-69, F
@SimplyTracie: Yes and I've had it at someone's house in a tagine with meat and other veggies, it was surprisingly good. Also like pickled okra.

I have it's called ladies fingers in other countries, I'm not joking, in the UK it's expensive as it's hard to grow here, nice though m, I've tried to grow it with no success.
SimplyTracie ยท 26-30, F
@ajoite: I'm gonna try and grow it. Great idea. ๐

SW-User
It's not my favourite but it doesn't ruin a dish or anything.
SimplyTracie ยท 26-30, F
@crossproduct: Do you cook it for your family?

SW-User
@SimplyTracie: Nobody really likes it, so I don't use it.
SimplyTracie ยท 26-30, F
@crossproduct: I'm not really surprised
Socialclutz ยท 36-40, M
Looks similar to a cucumber or zucchini. Slimy going down. My least favorite veggie
SimplyTracie ยท 26-30, F
@crabbyhermit: We will wait and see if it's somebody's favorite
Socialclutz ยท 36-40, M
Some ppl swear by it fried. I'll never eat it. Every time it's just slimy to swallow, fried or not.
SimplyTracie ยท 26-30, F
@crabbyhermit: Maybe it's not so goopy slimy if it's deep fried like a tempura
teri99 ยท 26-30, F
Fried with some spices. I've never had it with breadcrumbs on but that might be nice too
SimplyTracie ยท 26-30, F
@teri99: I like to try it too.

samueltyler2 ยท 80-89, M
I haven't ever really cooked it myself, I guess I am only the consumer.
SimplyTracie ยท 26-30, F

SimplyTracie ยท 26-30, F
@NigelDoes: You too huh?
NigelDoes ยท 56-60, M
