Do you have a well or provided ("city") water?

@SomeMichGuy Provided water

@Coralmist
Do you know what kind of pipes you have?
Copper is best and actually helps kill things. You might have galvanized.
You shouldn't have lead, but you could check your water provider's records to see what is supposed to be your connection to the water supply.
Others in your area likely have had issues, so I'd ask around. You might need to filter it.

@Coralmist If you look, copper v galvanized is easy; galvanized steel is greyish, copper you likely know (though it can have a dull patina, but never greyish).
