Why are you expected to have a liquid mixed with cereal?

Ie. What's wrong with eating it with no milk other fluid directly added to it?

depends on the cereal I suppose. Cheerios, C'apn Crunch are snackabke. I wouldn't do Wheeties or even Rasin Bran without milk.
