Question about bars?

When you go to a bar and order an old fashioned or a margarita, or any mixed drink, do they use name brand liquor to make it?

Like, if I order an old fashioned in a bar, will they automatically use a whiskey like Jack Daniel’s to make it? Or do they use a lower quality liquor?

Do you have to ask for a specific brand?

How does this work?

I think it depends on the bar, but if you want a more top shelf liquor than you usually have to specify. 🤔

That being said, I did most of my drinking in a room at home by myself, so I'm not fully qualified to answer this. XD Just hazarding a guess haha.

Funny story when I was on exchange with the USAF I went to the officer's mess and ordered a whisky. They served a bourbon. I explained that I was from Canada and that in Canada whisky is RYE whisky. The bartender laughed and said next time order a CC (Canadian Club). Here in Canada you get either house whisky or a specific whisky like CC or Crown Royal only if you order it. Back when I drank it non house brands were extra charges.

Usually they go with the house spirit unless you specifically state otherwise. The house spirit might be a brand name. Also you might get high-end liquor on special depending on what day you attend the bar of your choice.

What exactly does a house spirit mean?

@SW-User I'm talking about the rum, vodka or whiskey that is the bar's (aka the house's) regular/chosen go-to when you just order a drink and don't specify a certain brand of liquor.

Depends on the bar. It varies. Some cheap places will even water it down.

Yet once went after hours to a certain place, just to pickup their discarded bottles. They actually were throwing away the expensive good stuff with just a little bit remaining.

As much as a couple of shots. Actually got around ¾ of a bottle of Scotch whiskey from all the same brand bottles.

This goes for between $74 to $106 a bottle on the Internet.

@DeWayfarer That's a lot of money for blended Scotch.

@ninalanyon eighteen years isn't your average whiskey either.

I guess u could ask him or her to make it with Jack Daniel’s if u want

At a proper bar they will ask you if you prefer a brand. If not you say “Well is fine.” The well is below the bar where they keep the cheap stuff.

What does "well" mean?
@Fukfacewillie
Fukfacewillie · 56-60, M
@SW-User The “well” in a bar is under the bar where the glasses and sink and mixers are. The booze they keep down there is for the general mixed drinks. It is the less expensive stuff. So, if you say “well” is fine it means “I’m fine with the cheap stuff.”

For sweet mixed drinks “well” booze makes sense.

It legit depends on the bar. Although you can ask specifically for Jack Daniels in your old fashioned, and I'm sure they'll do it.
