Unfortunately, with the best will and care in the world, any system run by any organisation can break down. The more complicated and comprehensive it is, the more there is to go wrong.

Although Barclays Bank probably suffered an internal system breakdown, we've also to consider that remote criminals and "rogue states" are continually probing these big IT systems for weaknesses and to find how they are protected.

So chosing another bank will not necessarily guarantee higher reliability. Breakdown is always a hazard and we can only hope the banks make the risk as low as possible - it is not in their interest to do otherwise.
