For a single person, is it better to own, or rent?

Own if you can afford the prices right now. I am renting because home prices are too high for me here now but as soon as I land somewhere more reasonable I'll buy again

It is better to own. My father who has a serious case of C.A.S (cheap ass asian syndrome) instilled that in me. Why pay someone else's mortgage/bills when you can pay your own? In the beginning when my parents first got married they were broke ASF b/c it isn't like Uncle Sam was paying my mother much. Now they have a home in Korea where they met and married and an apartment in Russia where my father was born and holds citizenship. I, with help from my parents, own my apartment in Korea. They also helped my sister to buy her own apartment. That way if a relationship fails like my son's mother who nearly stabbed me to death she can kick the person out and still be stable and okay. It's always better to own your own place.

Your marital status has little to do with the equation. If you have the downpayment that makes your mortgage sufficiently affordable, definitely buy. Mortgage interest is deductible and helps protect your taxable income.

How long are you planning on being where you are now? If it is only going to be a year or two, I would say rent. If prices are going crazy where you live or intend to live, even if it is short term, it may be better to buy.

Probably always better to own (return on investment)but then again its better in first class than coach and better still to have a personal Lear jet

My friend just got an estimate of 10K to replace their oil burner..ouch

If you have a decent down payment and can afford the mortgage and property taxes and utilities then you should buy

@MrBrownstone A condo, like for someone getting their own place for the first time.

@SubstantialKick Buy. I have a condo myself
Depends on how secure your employment is my assumption.
