I think many people who fall for this are so incredibly lonely they're not thinking and some are mentally ill either way it's a crappy thing to do to someone

Very sad and I think it’s like you’ve mentioned here in a comment, people who are incredibly lonely and/or mentally ill often fall victim to these romance scams. There’s a YouTube channel “Catfished” where this scenario is played out constantly.
