Do/did your parents limit your use of eyeglasses or do/would you do that with your kids?

Or what are your thoughts about it? I've heard many stories about this, including from several friends. A lot of times parents just think their kids look better without glasses so they'll take them away or at least encourage kids not to wear them much, especially during certain occasions like weddings. Other times it may be because of financial reasons (they don't want kids to break them or need a new prescription and have to buy new ones). Sometimes it's to benefit kids' health and keep their eyes from becoming dependent on glasses. Do you think this is a good idea to help families? Do you feel that it makes kids better realize the importance of taking care of their eyes?

Explain the logic of that attitude? Would stopping a child from wearing a hearing aid if needed improve their hearing? 🙄

@HerKing I think it also kinda goes with preventing new prescriptions. If you don't change their eyesight much, their needs shouldn't change much either. And hearing aids are a bit different from glasses, usually not given as readily. It's quite a bit easier to function with blurry vision than hearing impairment too.
My son puts his on when he gets up in the mornings, and doesn't take them off until he showers or goes to bed. He's practically blind without them. I would never deny him his sight.
@PrivateHell Ua ---helloooooo that would def be child abuse - good for U to follow medical advice -

I never needed glasses until I was almost 40, but if I had a child who needed glasses I would encourage them to wear the glasses.

@DragonFruit Not everyone who needs glasses needs to (or should) wear them all the time. What if the child was wearing them more than an eye doctor said to?

How strange it would be, to be so self conscious and shallow that you'd take your kids glasses away because they look better without them.
matttheman13 · 36-40, M
@KittenfromHell Better than saying the kid looks ugly with or without glasses.
KittenfromHell · 61-69, F
@matttheman13 No. Neither of those things should be said to a child by a parent. Then they're just an asshole.

I don’t think parents should do that. If they have problems with glasses they should at least get their kids contacts to wear as well

No that doesn't seem right. I think even children can see the value of taking care of their ability to see.
matttheman13 · 36-40, M
@LAlexV They can still be very healthy and take care of their eyes without wearing their glasses though; lots of people do just that.
Obviously you are trying to tell a story of what happened to you - so just out with it - what did your parents do 20 years ago that you are scarred with today.

Would you?

@matttheman13 Compliments for not wearing your glasses or your bare face?
matttheman13 · 36-40, M
Compliments when I didn't wear my glasses... like when they'd seen me with them before. Such as when I started to go without glasses sometimes in school people would ask if I got contacts and when I said I just wasn't wearing my glasses they'd say that was nice or cute or whatever, but that would be compliments about my bare face too since that's what they were seeing and some people have even explicitly said I look better without glasses.
Fauxmyope2 · 31-35, F
@matttheman13 I get both. Most like my glasses but some prefer me without.
So when the dad is going to need a lift to the prostate doctor or to have reconstructive surgery on his hemorrhoids. Will he be taking a cab or having his blind as a bat kid drive him there.
they should just blindfold him.
