What age should parents stop buying their kids clothes

and just give them a clothing allowance so they can buy their own. Is it different for boys and girls?

My mother had horrible taste. I was 13 when I put my foot down and started to pick out my own clothes. She just went to the store with me and paid for everything. Prior to that, she would go to JC Penny and find a dress on the clearance rack and buy me three of the exact same dress in different colors.

@4meAndyou My mother paid but I was allowed to pick out the clothes myself. But I knew what would not have been allowed so I never tried to sneak in anything like that.

@katielass I didn't have the "not allowed" issue. I was pretty conservative....but I did buy a very low cut dress once. My mother was right there....so I think I came by my early cluelessness honestly.
