What age should parents stop buying their kids clothes

and just give them a clothing allowance so they can buy their own. Is it different for boys and girls?

My mother had horrible taste. I was 13 when I put my foot down and started to pick out my own clothes. She just went to the store with me and paid for everything. Prior to that, she would go to JC Penny and find a dress on the clearance rack and buy me three of the exact same dress in different colors.

@4meAndyou My mother paid but I was allowed to pick out the clothes myself. But I knew what would not have been allowed so I never tried to sneak in anything like that.

@katielass I didn't have the "not allowed" issue. I was pretty conservative....but I did buy a very low cut dress once. My mother was right there....so I think I came by my early cluelessness honestly.

I started buying my clothes when I was 12 I think

I guess it depends on how picky they are.

@cherokeepatti my kids were picky from about the age of 5. My own parents started giving me a clothing allowance when I was 12 but most of my friends just relied on their parents tastes.
Girls want to wear thong panties in highschool because all their friends are, so probably 14? Boys wear anything, so mom can keep buying theirs until they move out at 18 I think.

My own 3 children were all different so there are probably no hard and fast ages. My middle child would never have bought clothes at all if it had been left to him.

I always say instinct is best guide for parents, it varies so much. That is my best answer.

I'd say about 14 years old. 🤔

@Peaches for boys and girls ? or do you think fashion sense comes earlier, for one gender ?
Peaches · F
@Tuscan Well if you ask my daughter it comes at 5 years old. Every morning she would come out for school in her bathing suit?! 😁

@emptysoul44 is that the parents age then?
emptysoul44 · 46-50, M
@Tuscan no
I wore school uniforms, which made a lot of that moot. But otherwise I didn’t really have much of a say until I was using money from part time jobs to buy weekend clothes.

@bijouxbroussard I had to buy my school uniform out of my clothing allowance, before I could buy casual clothes.
