Onwards and upwards

Our 15 year old had some fantastic news this week. She has been offered a place on the very competitive hospitality apprenticeship she applied for. So from September she will be working three days a week in the kitchens of a large hotel, and attending college on the other two days. Although it seems scary that she is starting work so young, we think the routine and discipline of a "proper" job will suit her better than studying full time at college.

She went into school during the holiday to meet her teacher who gave her the good news. The school is thrilled with her achievement (as are we). This girl who spent more than half her short life in local authority care has shone through and succeeded. The feedback from her interview says that they were impressed by the work experience she did under her own initiative last year.

Now we just need to make sure she buckles down and passes her school exams 🤞

That is wonderful news.
It is so difficult for youngsters to get onto the ladder these days. So many businesses have restricted hiring newbies; some have restricted replacing leavers too.

@emmasfriend It is especially difficult in catering where contracts are low paid and precarious. This is a great arrangement. She gets a small salary for two years while she continues her studies (and lives at home). If she finishes the apprenticeship she will almost certainly get a permanent contract and the employer knows they are getting a dependable and trained member of staff.
