The birthrate in the UK is below that needed to sustain a stable population. Without immigration, the population would become disproportionately old and unsustainable as there would not be enough working age people to support the economically inactive retired. The idea that our economy is dependent upon migrant labour is clearly unacceptable to the right wing populist press, hence the claim that Britons are not having enough babies.

@SunshineGirl It's absurd to say it doesn't matter. If immigration is predominantly from different ethnicities and religions (all right, not to beat about the bush, if it's predominantly Muslim), while the indigenous population declines, then the nature of the country will change, indeed is already changing - for better or worse, of course.

@MartinII That is an opinion that you have formed, it has nothing to do with maintaining a stable population level and a functioning economy. Unless politicians interfere further with demographics, the free market will continue to regulate both.

@SunshineGirl The progressive change in the nature of the country is an observable fact. The matters of opinion are first, does one mind, and second, should governments try to prevent or mitigate its continuation.

You were the one who suggested it had something to do with maintaining a stable population level, not me. As for your new-found faith in the free market, please pull the other one!

Harsh reality is cost of living. Many families simply can't afford to have children. The default is both people in the couple need to work full time just to make ends meet.
ArishMell · 70-79, M
@Thinkingdeeper So their decision is entirely understandable.

There are also ideas or anecdotes about some couples not having children because they fear for the future, but how real or widespread this is, is probably very hard to know.
@Thinkingdeeper and fertility is very limiting. Low fertility.

Who are "they"?

What are "they" really saying?

What statistics are "they" [mis?}-quoting?

As you imply it's obviously a silly generalisation by people too lazy to find out or to report properly.

Of course Britons (not "brits") are still breeding, but the birth-rate has fallen in Britain and indeed many other countries.
No kidding. Whatever and everything to the disgusting empire of lies.
