Did you have an overbearing helicopter mom?

I didn't, thankfully. My mom actually was the opposite, and was extremely negligent. But in a way, I'm so thankful I had to become independent and self-reliant at an early age. I see the young people I work with who are still like toddlers in how prepared they are for the real world, and it makes me feel bad for them. They're gonna have a lot of rude awakenings.

I learned at an early age to keep a careful distance from my parents and not to trust adults to do the right thing. I still don't.
When I grew up, that wasn't really possible. I could jump on my bike in the morning and no one knew where I was until I came home. My parents didn't police my friendships much, either, not that they had any way of knowing who I was with when I wasn't home.

Even before cell phones, I noticed in the 90s when my son was a little kid, we were a lot more aware of where he was than my parents had been of me at the same age. I think this had more to do with the widespread reporting on child abductions and sexual abuse which made everyone terrified that their kid was going to be victimized if they were out of their site for a minute, even though those crimes were already becoming less frequent by then.

Today, with cell phones, it's completely different, with parents able to track their kid's location at all times and reach them at a moment's notice. Although I'm sure kids have figured out ways to sneak around and fool them, same as they always have.

Not helicopter parents outside home but they never had any patience to teach basic stuff and didn't want to risk mistakes that could potentially lead to some waste or damage so they rather did many things themselves. Learning from my grandparents was incomparably more relaxing. My mother has never failed to make me feel like a complete idiot whenever I tried to learn something new.
