Pretty sure my brother kept all the inheritance money for himself

Last year when Mom died, he had nothing- was sleeping on our dad's couch, had an old beater of a car, and had freshly lost his job.

Then he went completely silent for months. I reached out, worried sick, but never got any replies. The only way I knew he was still alive was because occasionally he'd like one of my FB posts.

Fast forward to yesterday.... suddenly he's got his own place, a brand new truck, and just bought 7 acres of undeveloped land. 🤔

If I find out he made off with the entire profits of the sale of our mom's estate, I will be so crushed and betrayed, Idk if I could recover from that. He's the only family I have left, and to think he could do that to me is really wrecking my world.

Not only did I raise him when our mom decided she'd had enough of parenting, but my role as his caregiver even extended into adulthood, when I was always ready to lend a hand to him when he needed it. I'm just so confused and betrayed.

Talk to the lawyer who did the probate and find out just what the will said and who took the money.

Aren't children forced heirs over there?
ChipmunkErnie · 70-79, M
@CrazyMusicLover If you mean in the USA, it would depend on whether the deceased left a will or died intestate. In the first case, basically the money goes wherever the will sates; in the second case I believe a court would decided on a fair distribution between the heirs.

@ChipmunkErnie Ah, here not even a will would help. The only way is the legal disownment based on a proof that the child committed a crime, didn't take care of the parent when this parent couldn't take care of themselves or the child leads a chronically disorderly life, whatever it means in a legal language. Maybe that the child is homeless, chronically unemployed while physically and mentally capable of working, repeatedly has debts, gambles, has history of drug abuse, couldn't take care of their own children etc.

@CrazyMusicLover Here the will is pretty much the final word UNLESS it is contested on some kind of legal grounds that challenge its validity.

Do you know if she had a will?
LeGrotesque · 46-50, F
@Quimliqer she did but in order to make the decisions about my mom's cremation, my brother had to be made the executor of the will. Sooooo pretty sure I got screwed. I trusted him. Guess I shouldn't have.

I understand totally. My brother did the same thing . He even lied to my parents that i was trying to steal the house so me and my older brother got nothing and he got a million dollar house and some oil rights. I found out about all of this 1 year later. I was there for my mothers death. Nothing was said
hunkalove · 70-79, M
When our father died eleven years ago my sister stole almost everything. As the oldest I was the executor but I'm a thousanf miles from home and she talked me into letting her do it. I've talked to so many people who have had this happen. Money is more important than blood. I haven't spoken to her since and I never will again.

@hunkalove Guess I'm not the only one with a shit sister. I can 100% see my sister doing this.
Just a gut feeling?

Confront him.

Inheritance money can turn relatives into grubbers and con artists.

Money is a dangerous thing - unfortunately you will have to make a decision that you can live with and not have any regrets. Get some advice, and a trusted friend who you can use as a sounding board. This is not something to let lie and fester or to make quick decisions about - good luck!
LeGrotesque · 46-50, F
@Crusher69 I have no one to go to about this
Crusher69 · 61-69, M
@LeGrotesque speak to a lawyer or any community service groups or citizens advice centre that may help?
