yay obviously

100% yes, although I also think that it would be fair to be able to turn down a job applicant if their pregnancy is likely to take them out of the workplace just when you need them. From what I can gather, UK law doesn't allow you to take into account a pregnancy when selecting a candidate. If someone is heavily pregnant and you are interviewing for a vacancy that requires immediate and sustained cover I see it as a bit pointless that you'd have still have to seriously consider hiring that person even though they'll likely be off work within a month, for example. I haven't found any particular clause that allows you to discriminate in that scenario, even though you would face additional costs for further recruitment to cover the person that you're hiring to cover someone else. You can only consider the pregnancy as a factor if the job would pose clear health hazards which would specifically endanger pregnancy.
In terms of maternity cover for existing employees I'm 100% for it. Also for paternity leave.

@Intissima Actually there is a provision in the law for the scenario that I've described, it seems.
So you can reject the candidate on the grounds of being incapable of filling the requirements of the role. That makes sense to me.
Practical Fit: If a job requires immediate, specialized training or hands-on presence that an 8-month pregnant applicant cannot physically provide in their final weeks, an employer can pass on them for capability reasons rather than the pregnancy itself.

@ostfuidctyvm ye so she can dislocate her hips and tear her coochie up and nearly unalive herself to create a human but no some company has decided they think she aint capable.
Nope.
Sorry you have that for the future young girls of this world.
I can’t believe you are still trying to make me feel sorry for a company?? When something needs to change it needs people to speak up not repeat the same draconian rules and regulations.

@ostfuidctyvm and your apathy is very frightening.
If a women is applying for a role and she has decided she is capable and has the requirements and biology has also decided she can handle nearly anything why are we not listening.
And what pathetic company keeps banging on about her not able to perform?
Becasue if that’s the case
Are they going to stop recruiting women because all women have the capability of getting pregnant.
Of having endometriosis
Of having all sorts
Please realise the law you are supporting is inhumane and discriminatory.
We are talking about maternity leave also.
Blessed are the women who have supportive family and friends. We have to look at supporting those ladies that don’t have that support.
If other countries have that support system in place and those same companies are recruiting and employing the same demographic in those countries then why are you letting them get away with it in your country?
if we can support people to make a living and live life with dignity why t are we saying no
To a pregnant women who probably is more desperate than all the other candidates to work hard and make living.
