I'd love to see the return of the large bookstores. Waldenbooks, and Borders. There used to be a bookstore at my local mall, and I was in there browsing at least once a month. NOW I can't see the books I want to read physically, nor can I see the showcased works of my favorite authors.
Interesting question. You had me checking out a list of closed down brick and mortar stores which was crazy long. Can’t say there were any I’ve really missed. Probably due to big box stores and online shopping. For example, I’d always liked Pier 1 Imports and Bed Bath & Beyond but they have nothing that can’t be bought on the internet.

@OlderSometimesWiser I see.
You raise an interesting point.
Though many people miss the retail stores it is the younger generation and seniors that rely on online shopping now via deliveries the most.

@Nimbus Yep, when you’re older than dirt you want other people schlepping your bags. 👵

@OlderSometimesWiser I try to avoid buying online but it does have it's uses ;)

° Whitefront (department store) before K-mart.
° Two guys (lumber)
° Toy's-R-Us
° Radio shack (when they actually sold resistors, capacitors and such). You really could fix stuff! Not just almost.
° Audrey's camera. You name the camera they had it. Even darkroom setups and photo paper. Bought my first camera there.
° Walden books!

Hard to choose, there have been so many. Sears, K Mart, Woolworth's, Bradlee's, Waldenbooks, Borders Books, Toys R Us, Crazy Eddie, etc., etc.

@Nimbus Maybe Sears. I love my Kenmore appliances, but they won't last forever.
cherokeepatti · 61-69, F
@AbbeyRhode Their Kenmore washers and dryers were really good
AbbeyRhode · F
@cherokeepatti Yep, and my stove, fridge, and microwave are all Kenmore. :)

Sears

@SumKindaMunster Seems to be the consensus here so far 👍
AthrillatheHunt · 51-55, M
Blockbuster
@AthrillatheHunt Hollywood and Family Video were more lenient about return times, you could take all day, whereas Blockbuster was 11am or face a late fee.
AthrillatheHunt · 51-55, M
@NativePortlander1970 bee kind. Rewind. Lol
@AthrillatheHunt No, we still got a $2 fee at those two places too.
Thinkerbell · 41-45, F
Sears.
Nimbus · M
@Thinkerbell A popular choice 👍

Do they still got Pizza Hut?
Hard to find one around here anymore 🇦🇺

@TheOneyouwerewarnedabout I haven't heard that name in a while!
AbbeyRhode · F
@TheOneyouwerewarnedabout They still exist, but likely not for long.

@Musicman They started using a great deal of store space for cell phones and not selling as many of the funner electronics
@cherokeepatti That's what I hear. ☹ They opened a big store chain called Planet Universe. It was so big it even had a McDonald's in it.
@cherokeepatti That's exactly why they went under, they stopped training their staff on their core products to focus on cellular, which alienated their core patrons because they no longer knew the difference between a pot and a capacitor.

Sears.
They had pants I liked.

@JoyfulSilence Yep! That's why you only need the basics. Every now and then we all need a screwdriver or a pair of plyers. An adjustable wrench comes in handy too every now and then.
JoyfulSilence · 46-50, M
@JoyfulSilence They come in super handy at times.
DrWatson · 70-79, M
Woolworth's.
Roundandroundwego · 61-69
@DrWatson oh yes, the ones with a lunch counter!
@DrWatson @Roundandroundwego Good one!

Kay Bee toys
@MrBrownstone KB was superior because Toys R Us didn't have model rocket kits like KB did.
Nimbus · M
@MrBrownstone Wow:
In 1999, the company operated 1,324 stores across the United States and was the second-largest toy retailer in the U.S., but it later declared bankruptcy in both 2004 and 2008 before going out of business on February 9, 2009.
Such a shame :(

That was another time, it just wouldn't be the same here and now in this time. You can put a Sears or Kmart or Thrifty in 21st century America but you'd just be putting them in a dystopian shit scape on the brink of nuclear war. The people, the culture, that's all gone, it's not coming back.
