That doesn't make any sense; there were millions of home computers in use already by then. Certainly in the UK a dozen different models of home computer predate the IBM PC.

@ninalanyon IBM introduced the XT in 1980. There were other computers, mostly 8 bit systems. Comodore had one. Tandy TRS 80, nicknamed the trash 80. Apple II. Timex even had one. When IBM came on board it was a 16 bit system and the Gates pitched the operating system MS-Dos to others to make them IBM compatible.
