How do I explain to my mom some people are caregivers or teachers or certain other "professions" by nature

My mom rolls her eyes at me for being a helpful person. She thinks I'm friends with my autistic friend because I think I need to help him. I told her that's not why, we just happen to be friends. I've always worked at front desk at hotels, but when I was job hunting once, I applied at a place for teens that are troubled and she hastily said "Oh, you just want to help people!" I said what's wrong with that!?? I went to college a few years ago planning on being an art teacher, but college didn't work out. I used to want to be a psychologist too. I think a lot of people have a "job" or a talent that comes naturally to them, but they may never actually get into that field to work and get paid. I explained all of this, but she's just an average non-worldly type of simple person that just doesn't get it. I told her I don't know why she looks doen upon me for having good qualities. We got into a fight about it one night. She has such a bad temper over nothing sometimes. She also seems to get more excited if I thought about taking a regular boring job like at a factory or some low paying job versus a good paying job that I actually would like to do. She never wishes the best for me.

In certain segments of society, the nail that sticks out is the one that gets the hammer. Many people in this group are suspicious of anyone who wants to improve their lot — they're putting on airs, or they're getting uppity — and are even more suspicious of people who want to do good without getting anything obvious out of it. It's a struggle to break away; for some reason, people will just not want to allow someone else to get out.
