Do you think this statement is true.

Family is a word used to describe a small group of people you feel comfortable enough around to completely let your gaurd down when your with them.

I hope I can have a family like that again.

I don't think some people realize not everyone has their birth family so they took it super literally.
Actual family members may be more keen to put up with diverging opinions within the group , because family means several generations are brought together, and some ties will remain, whereas friends are more likely to belong to the same generations and to make the same mistakes together.
But some families are more supportive than others. Families can feel oppressive too, that's why we need friends and family.

Yes, I know it's true for some people. Friends is the word I use, for those who fit the description...but are not actual family.

I mean. My family has seen me at my worst xD so yeah I guess in a way
GuyWithOpinions · 31-35, M
@assemblingaknob i think we choose our family. Its not always the people we grew up with.
assemblingaknob · 26-30, F
@GuyWithOpinions that's true too. But that would require you to put your guard down
ninalanyon · 61-69, T
You have to be kidding!
ninalanyon · 61-69, T
@GuyWithOpinions My closest relatives, the people with whom I have the longest history. But the fact that someone is family doesn't mean that they and you agree on every subject or that everyone can agree to disagree. My maternal grandmother was, on occasion, such a difficult person that when her youngest daughter, my aunt, left home to marry, the new son-in-law forbade his wife from visiting her mother. That was in the fifties, I'm not sure they ever met again.

@ninalanyon i was having the same issue with the statement. But what i think what GuyWithOptions is talking about is the family we choose, not necessarily the one were born into. Unfortunately, no other word has been coined to differentiate between the two or three different types of families. I've got the family i was born into, my Army family, my civilian family of friends and the family my wife and i created.
GuyWithOpinions · 31-35, M
@Jayciedubb yes thats what i mean.
hunkalove · 61-69, M
Not at all. I learned at an early age not to trust my parents. They were not nice people. I kept a careful distance and only spoke to them when i had to.
Not really. Family is a birth related group. Family descend from each other.
Society is more than family.

Blood will remain thicker than water...
@Unlearn or not,,- my family has stars and black sheep. We outcasts don't think much of the "family".
Carissimi · 70-79, F
Maybe, but I wouldn’t let my guard down with most of my relatives.
