How do you deal with in laws you despise?

Tons for me- I like my father in law and one of my sisters in law though.

My wife seems to be constantly on the phone with them- it's really weird- it's like they have no friends outside of family (my wife doesn't)- don't get me started on the fact my wife leaves video calls on when she briefly leaves to get something, etc- it's like fucking big brother!

It really feels like my wife hasn't cut the umbilical chord from her mum and is too dependent on her for an adult.

Don't get me wrong- my family are close too and would do anything for us- but I don't let them control my life.

It all stems from an argument when we were living in another town and then the mum and a few of her sisters followed- we lived in the same house- after a few months of their antics I like a human and not a robot snapped- my wife wouldn't even wear the necklace I got her because she was worried about what her family would think- pathetic.

My Ex Fil was fine, it was the mother who was the issue, I didn't like to be in her company, narcissistic,, I did confront her once, how she treated my kids differently, she turned it on me lol 😆 after that our relationship wasn’t the same.
Avoided her 😇

Sounds like my ex! Very controlling parent, she probably has issues and wants to keep them happy.
@SW-User Won't be easy- if you're from the UK and have seen the tv series "my family" she is exactly like Roger and his mum 🤭🙄

My mother in law did a very nasty number on me. I tried to avoid her as much as possible after that.
Unfortunately my husband went behind my back and invited her again without consulting me.

I was gobsmacked when he did not take my side nor the boys.
@revenant Sorry to hear that 😔

Yeah I'm closer to my mum but I don't like the term "Mama's boy" because it gives me that kind of image.

@BritishFailedAesthetic well he was very much mama's boy alright.......I believe when you get married, you ought to grow up 🙂

@BritishFailedAesthetic 😞sorry this is the sad fact of the out laws come between man and the missus more so the mother in law and unfortunately this brings conflict and disagreement sadly

She is definitely way too dependent on them. An adult should NOT be that close to their parents.
@DearAmbellina2113 100% agreed.

Does your mrs get on with her family?
@Gangstress On a positive note she does- that's not the issue though- I do too, we regulary have get togethers and I call my mum every night.

My family just don't get in my affairs and understand that I have a life outside of their decisions.

I also have friends- my wife has zero and I feel this is a common trend wih victims of toxic families.

Being passive-aggressive worked great with that one in-law who really hated me. My husband loves the most the things that she hated the most so I just thanked her for hating me so much. The scowl on her face made it all worth it.

I smother them with brutal hugs and kisses so they hate being around me more than I despise them.
@SW-User Couldn't get myself to do that 🤮

@BritishFailedAesthetic or continue to live with no boundaries
I had a meddling mother in law. She refused, after being warned dozens of times, to knock when entering our home. She would just barge through the door, all 300 lbs of her, with her gums flapping. Told me to "go f**k myself" when I politely requested she knock.
One rainy night, I ended up electrocuting her by wiring the door knob to the outside light switch. It didn't kill her, but she always knocked thereafter.

Why didn't I lock the door? Because I shouldn't have to in order to expect the common courtesy of knocking.

Wow you're making me feel better about my MIL now.

Jesus, even I wouldn't do that 😲
@BritishFailedAesthetic It worked, and my wife at the time backed me up, so you know the situation was out of control. I just forgot to turn off the switch when it was raining, so she got one heck of a jolt. Knocked her about 20 feet back through the yard. I only meant to buzz her, as a deterrent.
