I wouldn't vote for anyone without knowing their positions on issues, accomplishments, education, life experience. Often in local races when I'm not familiar with either candidate I leave it blank and assume those 'in the know' will decide.

@Dominus I quite often write in joke candidates in local elections. Especially here in Sherwood, where a lot of people run unopposed. Last year, I cast my vote for sheriff for Yosemite Sam.

@ChadJNSD For me personally I would just need to read more about him, his values, upbringing, military service, family and such. At least if I were to vote for him as a congressman or senator. For a local office in my area if I had not heard anything bad about him and had some evidence of it being true I would consider him. Then of course it depends on who the alternate choices are too.

@ChadJNSD Well if my perception of him was the same as yours then I would not vote for him either. Likewise if he was truly ambitious about being a member of congress he should have tried landing a job as a staffer for an existing member of congress rather than becoming a mayor. While mayors have gone on to later enter congress I think it is rare.

@Dominus I am afraid many people have a misconception about being a mayor of a small town. Not many people care, nor do the powers that be in North Dakota, even know who he is. This is the same story, in many states. But yeah you are probably right, it is not necessarily, the right stepping stone to greater things.

@ChadJNSD Well I think much depends on how small of a town as depending on where you're from you may consider 75,000 a small town whereas someone in North Dakota may consider >300 to be a small town. Then it is very unlikely the mayor of a small town is going to have any accomplishments worthy of national recognition or make important political connections. I know where I am originally from the mayor gets pulled around like a puppy on a leash by other city works and their unions telling him what they want in exchange for their votes. And without their votes he won't be reelected. So he goes with the flow to maintain his do little job.
