I shared a room with my sister until she moved out about a year after high school. She would have been 19 and I was 17.
Then I shared a room my first year of college with a female roommate. I never found it to be a big deal.

Those who can't afford to move out and be on their own? Speaking strictly from a Western perspective. In a large chunk of the rest of the world, multiple siblings share a single room, and in some cases, it's a common room, as in they put their bedding away when they wake up, and the room is re-used for some other purpose.
