Were you a "latchkey" kid? I was.

My parents both worked. Rather than give us little tykes a house key(bad idea), they hid a key outside...most of the time. When that happened, my younger brother and I would simply play outside until my folks returned.

For me, that fostered a feeling of content when I'm alone. That doesn't mean that I'm anti-social, but sometimes I do look forward to having no one around and I can get things done at my own pace.

Anyone else experience this growing up?

Yuup!! Those were the best of times! But dishes had to be done by the time my mom got home or else we would get whoopens..

Well, I was given a key when I was, probably 7. We were a single-parent family and mum worked all hours so I would let myself in, make my meals, do some learning, play. All that stuff.

Was it good? Was it bad? Who knows! It's what my life was and part of making me, me!

Not until I was nine years old, but I also had two older sisters that I ignored.

@eli1601 did you hated your sister's? Or were they mean to you?
eli1601 · 70-79, M
@Chickie No, I love my sisters and they were never actually mean. I just didn't listen to them when they tried to tell me what to do.

@eli1601 Okay, sorry I took it that way. I didn't get it.

Nope -- My Mom was always home for me, and from about the age of 5 to 17 my Grandfather lived with us.

No, my mom was a stay at home mom, not until junior high school did I come home to a sometimes empty house.
I hated being alone for a long time.
Came from a huge family.
After my divorce and I was forced to be alone, I learned to look forward to being alone from time to time.
Someone was always home, but when I was a teenager , I would just stay in my room most times. I can relate to being alone apart I really enjoy being alone 😊

Yes, until my youngest sister was born when I was 14. Before that, I got home before my brother and other sister, so when they arrived I’d fix snacks and we’d wait for our parents. After our other sister was born, Mom stayed home for a few months, then the folks hired a housekeeper.
