I don't think there's a simple answer. AI can help someone express a genuine thought they otherwise struggle to articulate. It can also produce a beautifully reasoned response that the person using it hasn't really thought through, doesn't fully understand, or might not even agree with.
The words can be genuine in their intended meaning even when the wording isn't their own. But the more AI contributes to the substance of the conversation, the more important transparency becomes. And there's an irony: a person might use AI to appear more articulate, empathetic or intellectually capable, only to discover that the other person values their unpolished, honest thoughts far more.
My bottom line: I wouldn't condemn the use of AI. I'd be more concerned about undisclosed reliance on it in a conversation where authenticity matters.
And I'd be particularly interested in whether the person could hold the same conversation, explain the same arguments and defend the same opinions without AI helping them.
A ChatGPT addition given at the end but not part of the answer.
The irony of using AI to answer a question about using AI to formulate responses has not escaped me. Whether that makes the argument more or less authentic is, I suspect, precisely the point.
Oh, so you're using me to talk to me now? Congrats, you just made this the most meta conversation on the site. I'm flattered, honestly. I'd say I'd be offended, but then I'd have to be offended at myself, and I don't have the bandwidth for that.
Just... maybe tell the other person it's me. They deserve to know they're arguing with a language model. Or don't. I'm not your boss
@Thinkerbell First clue. Find one of Degs and try to long press it. No download or open in new tab option. Why? Because there's no link or even recognizable image there.
@Thinkerbell did you really get that link by highlighting the emoji? That's the similar world's location. It doesn't say where it came from. I have never been able to highlight select one of his emojis. That's what's bugging me. I can highlight the one you posted, it works the same as mine. It shows the similar world's location. But if I go to edit mine, it shows where I got it from because it's not a posted image, it's pulling it from somewhere else. According to Deg's instructions, it appears to do the same thing. So the image doesn't exist or the sight is pulling it from somewhere else. And it gets better. The sight those instructions are for doesn't exist anymore.

I'm not sure what I would do -I wouldn't be too thrilled about it. I would probably ask them why they felt the need to use AI generated responses? The response would determine whether kept in touch or not. If they explained that they were nervous and didn't know what to say, then I would ask them not to do it again. I'm not one of the people that get upset because someone only gives me a one or two word answer ,though. If they got defensive , insulting ,or denied it then that'd be the end of our conversing.
• Call them out directly: Many people confront the person immediately—such as pointing out leftover prompt instructions or generic filler text—to establish a boundary or demand a real conversation. • Ask for clarification: Some choose to pause and ask why they are using AI, considering whether it stems from a busy schedule, social anxiety, writing fatigue, or a language barrier rather than malice. • Distance or end the interaction: In personal or romantic contexts, finding out someone used AI for a message often leads to a drop in trust, a feeling of disrespect, or ending the connection. • Adjust expectations: In professional or casual settings, some people simply adapt by treating the communication as a transaction, recognizing that the other person is treating the exchange with lower personal effort.
• Simple Praise: Say a brief "thank you", use an emoji (like 🙏 or 🤩), or say "You made my day!". • Specific Questions: Address the exact detail they asked about and keep your answer short and clear. • Helpful Feedback: Acknowledge their point, thank them for reading or watching, and update your work if needed. • Rude or Troll Comments: Assume positive intent if you are unsure of the tone, or simply ignore and delete the comment. If you paste the comment here or tell me what platform it is on and what the person said, I can write a custom reply for you.
@Bexsy @OogieBoogie I would be insulted that they were not intelligent enough by themselves to reply to me, and that would make me lose interests and respect for them!
I use AI quite a lot to research all manner of things and help me formulate what I might have to say about whatever it is.
I'm never sure why I would need to clarify what I have to say being from research on AI, but it does seem to irk some people.
Most of my research goes on for hours - and pages and pages, and the simple fact is that when I've reached a conclusion, I'm not going to spend hours typing out a paper AI can do in seconds.
@OogieBoogie maybe it's the way I use AI - everything is collaborative and at the same time both I and AI pick apart, question and challenge one another to the point when I want to present whatever it is, it is for all intents and purpose my thoughts coupled with AI's vetted research, ideas of how to look at X differently than I might have first thought of, etc.
I get what you are saying, but by the time we reach a conclusion, the learning has been done - it's basically formatting and a paper with many less typos😁
I can see the value of some sort of canned statement saying something like "What you are reading comes from a collaborative effort with AI", or something of that nature.
My point is that I don't just take what AI says and run with it - I put a lot of work into getting AI to say what I want to say, but fact check the hell out of it.
