Sometimes, you just can't help
My bestie has a friend who has become an acquaintance of mine. She is trying to start up a publishing company where she does the publishing, and she gets a cut of the proceeds of the book sales.
This isn't a new idea, but most places offer editiors, marketing (the hardest part of publishing) and other services where that cut of the proceeds is well worth it. She is just offering the publishing part.
She also has a podcast that, I'm sorry, is just boring and confusing. She wants to talk to small authors and talk about world building, but only ends up talking about the books the authors have already written. She also wants it to be about mindfulness but barely broaches the topic. Then she has a section that suddenly pops up as "Buffy Night". At first, I thought she was saying it was for when her husband allowed her to watch the big screen tv, but it was actually her dad. Sometimes, she talks about the show. Most times, it's unrelated to the show, or anything to do with her podcast.
Her season finale is discussing the shows of the season.
I've only listened to the first season. I can't bring myself to listen to anymore.
She doesn't want to take constructive criticism and swears her business is about to explode as she keeps pouring money into it, certain it will come back 10 fold. Her podcast, after 2 years, has only had the highest download of 31.
I just hate to see someone stuck in a sunk cost fallacy and refusing to make any changes, despite the metrics showing nothing is panning out.
I know success can be slow, but the service she offers is provided by a lot of other places with much better offerings. She can't seem to gain more than 140 followers and only less than 1% engagement.
It's hard being a content creator these days. Money is tight and AI is making it harder to put things out there, knowing it is going to suck up your IP and be used elsewhere without consent.
I support her doing the work, but even I am willing to stop if there isn't even an encouraging return for my investment. I hope she is correct and it will burst wide open, but currently, there aren't even fussure cracks.
