Do you think that people try to not act in wrong ways just because they fear to be caught?

Like if they could get away with it they would act on those things.

Some even do bad things knowing they will most definitely get caught, so yes. Thankfully not everyone is that way, but many certainly will take every opportunity to take advantage of a situation regardless of the consequences for others if there's even a chance to get away with it.
@SW-User thanks for the best comment! 🤗

@NerdyPotato That is why I don't like the motivation of some religious people. If the only reason you do good things is to avoid hell and go to heaven, that makes you a sociopath.
@JimboSaturn agreed. Morality can't come from a book. It needs to come from within.

To go the reverse way with this, I think most people whom act badly do so, because they don't think they'll be caught or punished for doing so...

The people whom act nice, probably act nice because they were on the wrong side of it, or seen it happen and don't want that type of thing to continue.

Some of the time, but agree with the observation below that those who already do negative things don’t think there will be negative consequences tht affect them personally and are at least momentarily indifferent to how their actions may have negative affect for others .

Those who don’t do bad things probably resist because of their empathy for others.

@WhateverWorks right too, empathy plays an important part too
CrazyMusicLover · 31-35
Oh, there are so many levels of bad. I think we all are guilty of some of them to some degree.
fun4us2b · M
Sometimes - but it's always about perspective. I think many people do wrong things, but in their minds these things are ok...they use their own logic to justify what they are doing, and why it is OK
SW-User
@fun4us2b yep basically what is wrong for someone could be perfectly fine for another person
I agree with others that an important factor is empathy - to be able to understand and care about how a wrong affects the victim.

And if empathy doesn't exist for the doer, threat of punishment does helpZ

Yes.
I think it is in all of us. But obviously the impulses on people differ and some things are a lot worse than others that people fear doing.
SW-User
@SW-User yep, some are worse and more detrimental, like crimes etc
Sandcastler · 22-25, M
yeah definitely. there's even a bunch of stuff that I want to do that's legal that I don't do just because of social pressure not too. so I guess the illegal stuff is even more like that
calicuz · 56-60, M
Yes, I think if not for the fear of prison there would be more law breaking
SW-User
@calicuz or the shame
JimboSaturn · 51-55, M
Yes they are called sociopaths or psychopaths.
SW-User
@JimboSaturn so in the end lots of them simply didn't act on their desires yeah very likely.
JimboSaturn · 51-55, M
@SW-User I think they do what they can get away with.
exchrist · 31-35
I'd say that u've made an accurate assessment
Yes. Cops stop the speeding by being seen.
DunningKruger · 61-69, M
Fear of humiliation, fear of social consequences, even fear of punishment by the authorities influences a lot of how people behave. There are some people who would likely have no moral compass at all it were for social pressures.

Some, not all
what Jimbo said......
MartinTheFirst · 26-30, M
Yeah definitely, in some ways I think that's a good thing. We should be afraid of doing what is wrong. 😌
SW-User
@MartinTheFirst id way anything that ends up affecting others negatively, but ofc we can affect ourselves too and that isn't seem as bad as others? Idk why
MartinTheFirst · 26-30, M
@SW-User Yes that's the societal way of seeing it, but sometimes the world is just wrong...
SW-User
@MartinTheFirst ahh we can talk endlessly about lots of things that's nice about you 🤗🤗🤗
MethDozer · M
Yo some degree bit not much. Threat of punishment or ridicule has little effect on criminality v and behaviour beyound childhood.
SW-User
@MethDozer yeah but those are only the ones we know that act on, about the ones that don't act we don't know and surely the ones acting on are just the tip of the iceberg
