Things we now know from the India outbreak

Covid was never just a "little flu". A hospitalisation rate of even 1% is catastrophic when the richest countries only have 3 ICU beds per 1000 people.

Once all the ICU beds are full, the fatality rate of covid jumps multiple fold because not only do people with covid not get oxygen, anyone with any kind of medical emergency cannot get help

No country was anywhere near herd immunity prior to mass vaccinations. If there was mass gathering and no outbreak, it just meant the virus hadn't got there yet

Heat and light does not slow down infection, only distance and avoiding bodily water droplets.

Lockdowns, even though they are crippling, are a lot less financially ruinous than a mass outbreak. Masks shouldn't even be a debate, they are nothing more than a nuisance compared to the alternative, a complete nobrainer precaution

The virus doesn't care "how well" a country had controlled the spread previously, all it needs is one opening in a mass gathering and it'll set the country alight like a spark becoming a wildfire

India now has the full blown horror of the bullet America dodged. Its Medical services and supplies are hopelessly inadequate, the crowding and poverty make the New York numbers look tame and once it gets into the community even the rich are going to fall victims. Thank your lucky stars Trump is not still in charge. But getting a lockdown to work in America was never going to work..And that is going to mean a slow uneven recovery. The real damage is not visible yet.

@whowasthatmaskedman I think this thing in India is going to hit the world economy hard. Suspect we are going to see some horrific scenes in India not just from the virus but a breakdown of society in general

@plungesponge Social unrest (to say the least) could be a real threat. I guess it must be a new experience for the wealthy to experience helplessness, though one wouldn't wish it upon anyone :(

@PhilDeep The hard part to get your head around is that just about every single person on this forum is considered among the worlds wealthy. A roof over your head. Food in your belly and enough access to electricity and communications to be on line. A sobering thought..

@whowasthatmaskedman This is very true and worth reflecting upon 👍
