A colleague of mine was in an accident where she lost a leg (at age 25). She was very depressed for awhile, but with counseling and loved ones rallying around her, she actually came back even better—she became more active than she’d been with two legs, participated in athletic events for the disabled. When she received her prothestic leg, she trained and ran a marathon—something she’d never even considered doing before. I don’t know if I personally could recover on that level, but obviously it can be done.
