I was living in Lansing, Michigan. My mother's nursing home was right next to a school and the speed limit was 15 mph. I had to get her to a doctors appointment, and I was doing 20 or 25 and I got pulled over by the cop who was sitting there waiting for me. It was a hundred dollar ticket.

All that month the city was fundraising, and I got a total of $400.00 in tickets in various places, for things like not knowing that the speed limit changed to 10 mph lower than it had been a mile back because a tree grew over the speed limit sign so you couldn't see it. But I was still supposed to know the speed limit changed, and a police car was sitting right there.

I think my out of state license plate had a lot to do with being stopped so many times for such piddling little infractions.

@4meAndyou yup put of state tags is a good police stop

@4meAndyou Yes, the out of state tags can make you a target. Move to a different state and there's a time deadline for registering your auto in the new state. As little as 10 days for some states. Also for getting a new drivers license and for updating the insurance. Beyond the deadline and there's a possibility of 3 offenses in addition to what you are being stopped for. A potential for big $$$ for the city treasury.

@Heartlander I did apply for a Michigan drivers license and received it, but moved back to Massachusetts before my registration had to be renewed.

My favorite (tongue in cheek) experience was ...

... when visiting a popular Texas city for a wedding I was ticketed for parking too far from the curb. I just so happened to have a tape measure and checked. One tire was an inch beyond the legal distance. But, I was parked in a parking bay, far out of the line of traffic, and it was a compact car. A truck parked in front extended at least two feet beyond me.

Later ... I was at the hotel, chatting small-talk waiting for an elevator, when someone mentioned that they had been arrested earlier in the day for getting married in the park without a "wedding in the park" city permit.

@Heartlander Wow. Sometimes it's just petty.
