What you're talking about is lucid dreaming. There are ways to prepare your mind so that you can do it. But most of them basically involve noticing details that aren't right.
Try this. Throughout the day, even if you're sure you're awake, pick up a book and read through it. If you were asleep and dreaming, the words would shift and move around, unlike boring old real life.
