how can you handle living in a cluttered flat

i've lived in this little 1 bedroom flat for 20 years now....but right now it's very cluttered full of stuff and very untidy and i feel overwhelmed to know where to start tidying up? my flat is cluttered with clothing in refuse bags, books, dvds, paperwork in bags....footwear in boxes.....if my mother were to visit me she'd be cross with me for letting it get like this...what can i do?

Start with the trash bags. Pick ONE bag up, drag it over to the sofa, open it, and see what's inside.

SORT whatever is in there. I assume it's either old or off season clothing? If it's clothing you haven't worn in two years or more, put it back in the bag, and take the bag to a local clothing consignment shop, or donate it to charity.

If it's off season clothing, it should go into a large see through plastic storage box instead of a trash bag, so that you can easily see what's inside.

You might have to BUY one or two see through storage boxes.

Now, do that every day until the trash bags are gone.
Maybe you can donate some stuff to a charity. Sometimes they'll even come pick it up. That's what I do.

Anything I haven't worn at least once in the past 12 months gets donated to charity.

Any books I find hiding on a shelf that I didn't know were there ..nor did I miss not seeing, get donated as well.

Any DVD's I find that I'd forgotten that I had, get donated.

Any paperwork in bags that I forgot I'd had in the first place, goes into the shredder.

Any footwear that I don't wear regularly but had good intentions of wearing when buying them, get donated.

Think of all the stuff you own as having a shelf life, no different than a container of cottage cheese in the fridge. Once that 1 year shelf life expires on stuff that hasn't been used or acknowledged that you even own, it's time is up!

You got to decide what you want in life throw out wich you haven't used in last one year else clutter isn't going away

If it's in a trash bag it's trash, if you haven't used it in a year get rid of it

@Thinkerbell not possible.

@durinsBane1983

In that case, you'll have to start getting rid of stuff.

Start small, maybe half an hour a day, but be regular.
