I remember sampling part of an acorn.

I ate acorns but nobody dared me. I did it on my own, gathered up about a quart of them, shelled them, boiled in salty water about 3 changes of water, then drained and roasted them in the oven. I was 9 years old and hungry for a salty snack. Nobody was at home when I did it, it was an experiment. And I had never been taught how to process acorns the Cherokee way…I guess it was some kind of instinct. As I found out about 15 years ago not all acorns are alike…some are so full of tannins that it’s probably impossible to make them edible.

@cherokeepatti I tried to eat one raw. It had a bitter taste.
I lived the remainder of the fall and all winter in a tree.

@ProfessorPlum77 You gotta boil the tannins out in several changes of salt water before they are edible.

@ProfessorPlum77 Did you have to go to the doctor? Because that’s enough to plug up your intestines. My daughter had lupus and her bowels would get so inflamed she couldn’t go to school for 1-3 days at time. I had bought some blackberry leaf herbal tea to get off of soft drinks. One day when I was at work she opened up the box and made a cup of tea and called me at work that morning excited saying it was healing her…. She ended up drinking 3 cups that day and was able to go to school the next day. Then I looked for books about herbs in the library till I found one that mentioned blackberry leaf tea being a Cherokee remedy for intestinal problems because it has tannins in it. Black tea has tannins but also caffeine and caffeine is a stimulant.

@ProfessorPlum77 I started reading up on every new thing she was craving and consuming a lot of and each one had healing benefits for her medical condition. Blackberry leaf tea, Curry spices, Green Tea, Salmon, Eggplant, etc. I have a theory that each of us has an inner physician if we will listen we will find what is healing for us.

@ProfessorPlum77 Have read that it has at least 2 dozen health benefits and they keep researching it for more. If I haven’t drank it in a long time I will make it fresh and drink it hot with lemon and sometimes cardamom seeds or fresh spearmint…it makes my insides feel cool when I have inflammation.
