While I've experienced worse pain, the sensation I hate the most is what I call a nerve itch that happens in my feet, likely because of my neuropathy.
What happens is that I get an intense itching sensation in my feet that nothing will resolve. Scratching does nothing. I've tried soaking my feet in epsom salts. Didn't help. I've tried all sorts of anti-itch creams. Didn't help.
Ultimately, I found that the only thing that helped at all was this lotion called Diabetaid, which contains capsaicin, the stuff that makes chili peppers hot. It helps, but only slowly. I have to slather it on my feet and then put on socks to keep the lotion from getting everywhere — you do not want this stuff on any of your more delicate parts.
This will often at least calm things down enough that I can sleep, or at least tolerate the itch without loosing my mind until it subsides.
