I thought OP's original statement that "Modern society is all about ironing out the kinks" was a great turn of phase addressing two problems we have in today's society: (1)too many people using past dogma to justify unacceptable behavior and (2) the assumption that improving society is either complete or incomplete, a success or failure, rather than a continual work in progress.

@Mathers Do you ever take a moment to remember what it was like during our childhood? Well, you missed WWII and the Korean War, and most of Jim Crow segregation. But there must be some memories of the Cold War, Vietnam, the Weathermen and Unabomber, to mention just a few, in your memory bank.

@dancingtongue go back even farther in more grand scales. Feifdoms, slavery, nob execution, general violence, human chattel, eunuchs, arrainged marriages, etc. While still existing are far less deamed acceptable by society at large than in the course of history.

Honestly I think the person is equating the current conditions of states with general societal norms.

I'm also not missing the fact that we are seeing the broadest alliance of support for the victim -- and the bravest, innovative defense by a civilian population -- since WWII and the revelation that the Wannabe Czar has no clothes, and his usual enabling allies are not being that supportive.
