Why am I now just realizing this?

As I'm entering what most would call my twilight years, why am I now finally seeing what I should have been doing with my life all along? I hate that I squandered so much of it.

Don't get me wrong. I spent most of my life doing a lot of what I love. For 20 years I was able to travel across the country with a video camera seeing things I wouldn't have seen otherwise. It's just on a more personal level where I feel I've come up short.

@Zoranna We all have regrets and feelings that we wasted so much of our lives on frivolous things. That quote comes to me regularly.

@MrBill36 I don't see how I would have done things differently but I didn't waste my life on frivolous things, I was too preoccupied with study and work. I think I view the youth today, I'm talking about teenagers and young adults, with some slightly wistful jealousy but I wouldn't want to do it again. If that makes any sense. 🤔

Make the time you have left count. In whatever way 'count' has meaning for you.

That's what I'm trying to do. With varying degrees of success and outbreaks of regret.

Help the young? I was young once, I was invincible and knew I would live forever, no one could teach me anything about life. I'm confident if, like Scrooge's ghosts, I had appeared to myself and related what would happen that the younger me would have dismissed it as fantasy.

But I agree, self pity is not to be wallowed in.
