How did you like the trip?
I've always wanted to take the Ghan through the center of Australia.

@Gusman I'm always amazed that you can still go places where very few people go, and get to them pretty easily. I hiked into a valley in West Texas in November once, and I was the first person to go there that year. I've hiked 40 miles on trails without seeing another human being. Solitude is there for those who seek it out. And even on the train, just seeing those areas is soothing.

@windinhishair Agreed.
I am in Western Australia, and I often go out into the countryside and there is no one around.
I go to out of the way places, not tourist spots.

@Gusman Those are the best places. I often find signs of native encampments from hundreds of years ago, as well as petroglyphs and pictographs on nearby rocks, in areas that are uninhabited. After a while, you can pick them out pretty easily by looking for the same things they would have looked for--a water source, shelter, and food resources.

I drove to Adelaide from Vic and just took it across the Nullabor. Still amazing. The sense of scale.
I drove the whole way back six years later.

@Abstraction Driving across Australia is great as well. One can stop anywhere along the way, take as long as one likes.
I have driven from Perth to Melbourne twice. Standing on the edge of the Great Australian Bight is Spectacular.

@Gusman The Bight - On the edge of those cliffs, the ocean. Unforgettable.
Gusman · 61-69, M
@Abstraction I never had a camera with me.
But I have those memories.
I intend to drive across again in the next year or so.
