I was married to a man with bi-polar disorder. I didn't realize there was anything wrong with him when we first met, because he was masking the disorder with alcohol and drugs. That's really typical for people with the disease. It feels so bad when they plunge into their deep depression that they have to self medicate...usually with booze or beer or pot.

His "up" periods were marked by terrible bouts of unreasonable anger that seemed to come out of nowhere, almost as though he was hallucinating things that I never actually said.

It didn't turn out well. He was prescribed lithium at one point, and stopped taking it, which was followed by a bout of violent behavior and I had to have him taken away by the police after he hit me in the head with the telephone.

Eventually he stopped most of the drinking, and was a pot smoker primarily, but that didn't make things better. He became a work-a-holic instead of the man I married, (who liked to enjoy his life with ME). He distanced himself, and finally just became so distant and cruel the end followed very quickly.

My ex-wife was diagnosed with that after we got divorced although we didn't part ways because of that.
She was always well behaved in my company so it didn't bug me.
Her boss saw her bipolar nature quite clearly one day though. She aimed a loaded gun at his head and threatened to kill him because he was so incompetent.

No but if the person isn't on meds it's gonna be a rollercoaster ride.
