Lost my walking partner

We were working up to 5 miles a day, now the dog doesn’t want to go more than 2. He’s starting to be how Rita was. It makes me sad. I guess walks are too boring for him now. I always say German Shepherds are too smart for me. He probably wants more mentally stimulating exercise. Well, I can’t provide that. I can get us out in the sunshine for 10-15 miles a day or run for 3. That’s it. Guess I can run him for one mile every morning and then send him back home with his weakened people (one has gout all the time and the other is sick for unknown reasons…all the time). When I move back home, that’s it; no one else will take him on these walks. 🤷🏻‍♀️

Honestly, though, it’s kind of lonely when a dog doesn’t even want to go for a walk with you.
Awww, that’s a bummer. You could check with local animal shelters. Apparently they LOVE for volunteers to take the dogs for runs/walks. I hope that’s a possibility for you! Otherwise, maybe you could join a group who does daily jogs? I’ve seen them on meetup!
Shame the zombies aren’t better company lol
@cherryxblossom I used to do that. It’s how I ended up finding Rita. I’m afraid that if I did that again, I’d end up adopting another dog. That’s a bad idea since my health is being unpredictable. 😅
@Colonelmustardseed I understand that..,pretty hard to resist falling in love with the animals! I still think of this cat I saw at the shelter once..Ichabod was his name…all these years later I still regret not adopting him! Lol They haunt you
@cherryxblossom That’s such a cool name for a cat. 🥺

My dog was like that, his back legs were going.

Yeah you need an old people dog who isn't demanding intense exercise stimulus. I call sherpherds family dogs cause it's tough to be one person to take care of their needs.
@Queendragonfly I need a dog who likes walking/hiking or running a lot. My mistake was thinking they all did. 😞
Old people dogs though. 🤭 My mom has this little chihuahua. When she was a puppy, I refused to walk her because I was afraid the hawks would go after her. Maybe I should give her a chance now that she’s bigger. Not sure if she can walk 5 miles, but I’ll try.

@Colonelmustardseed Oh you wanna walk 5 miles? Get a husky, or this one

He's really fast and can run and run and run. It's my friend's dog. We don't know his breed he is a rescue but my bet is something with tall as legs lol.

My girl won't go after dusk because of the neighborhood fireworks, I totally feel you. Nothing sadder than a big dog who nopes out of walks.
@Starcrossed I don’t enjoy fireworks these days either because poor dogs freaking out breaks my heart.

@Colonelmustardseed she goes in the basement under the guest bedroom every evening after dinner and spends all night alone now, even when there hasn't been any booms. It's so sad.

Sheppard’s have ALOT of fur. Maybe a short haired light brown crème colored Labrador R., known for running /walking would suit you. Boxer are high energy too!
@Mindful Good point. Even if it was cooler temps at certain hours, that’s not significant enough for him with all that fur. ☹️

they tend to become like that when they're old, not because it's boring but from arthritis and stuff
@MartinTheFirst He’s barely 3 years old. 🥲

@Colonelmustardseed he's a spicy lil hot dog 🥺
The most likely problem is your dog's hips are starting to hurt, German Shepherds have that issue when they get older, my Grandparents and other relatives had about 20 of them when I was growing up and into my adulthood, around 8 to 9 years of age they get arthritis, so don't get mad at them for your own ignorance.
@NativePortlander1970 He’s only about 3. It’s so sad that that could be his future though; that so many of them are prone to that.
@Colonelmustardseed That's the problems with specific breeding, it affects their body parts they engineer, for example the pug breeds, like French bulldogs and Boston terriers, their nasal passages are severely fucked up because they're bred for their short snouts, most suffocate to death.
@Colonelmustardseed As for German Shepherds, they were bred to be jumpers to catch people on the run for the military and police, so they focused on strengthening their hips, which over time causes the arthritis.
