I have done that. But usually, when I truly DO step on a cat, the stepping is almost always followed by that electric sound informing me there's no doubt I've stepped on a cat.
I accidentally trod on my dog's paw this afternoon when taking him for his walk. He yelped then looked at me like he thought I hated him, he had a 'what the f*ck was that for, dad?' look on his face. I still hate myself, he didn't understand when i said sorry 😞
