The Long Man of Wilmington

This chalk man may not be as old as you think. As there is no record before 1710.

But above it is a barrow dating back 3500 years. And if you have lunch below the long man, the sun will be directly behind you at midday.

I walk there in the autumn. The composers Benjamin Britton and Frank Bridge did once too.

It sits below the South Downs Way.

The rather less discreet Cerne Giant faces roughly West, but like this chap on the South Downs, his history is still a puzzle thanks to no known written records until historically relatively recently.
