Creationism and particularly Young Earth Creationism is a dying belief...and for good reason. I'm here to throw a few more nails into that coffin.

I'm in the mood to educate Creationists on the subject of Evolution. What are your questions? Criticisms? Misconceptions? Ask the Atheist!

Any of you seen any of the YOUTUBE stuff featuring young earth creationists and other evolution deniers. One of the most notorious of these is Kent Hovind, an alleged "doctor" with a "degree" from a "college" that is not mucxh more than a shack in the desert. An unpleasant individual to boot, with convictions for fraud and domestic abuse. Other young earth spouters include Ray Comfort. They are bible literallists who project their lack of actual scientific knowledge.

@autumngirl27 They're hilarious, and provide wonderful entertainment.

@autumngirl27 it really doesn't matter how old the earth is just because we may misinterpret the Bible doesn'take evolution the start of everything.yes evolution exist but if we came from monkeys why do we still have monkeys? Evolution eliminates things and changes things for the better. What only for some and not the other .monkeys?
@Klingwood
if we came from monkeys why do we still have monkeys?

If you and our cousins both arose from your grandparents, why do your cousins still exist?

Humans share a common ancestor with other primates and other apes.
We did not necessarily come from those relatives.
Chimpanzees and humans share an ancestor. Humans did not come from chimpanzees.

Evolution eliminates things and changes things for the better.

Allow me to correct this misconception.

Evolution does not do anything " for the better" because that implies value.
What evolution does is select for traits that increase the ability of a population to survive and reproduce.
There is no bad to good or good to better. There is only what is adaptive to a given environment under specific conditions
@Klingwood There are hundreds of breeds of dogs. Why are there still wolves?
Klingwood · 61-69, M
@Pikachu leaves the same question no matter if it's for value or for reproducing .and some how evolution knows which will do better lol
@Klingwood

No it's a different question entirely.
You are under the impression that evolution is a progression from worse to better but the reality is that "better" is a subjective circumstance. A fish is better at swimming, a monkey is better at climbing. Is one of these animals objectively " better" than the other?

some how evolution knows which will do better lol

No!
Evolution doesn't know which will do better.
Evolution is the model which describes how certain traits succeed or fail to propagate under given environmental circumstances.
There is no agency.
@Klingwood You do realise that these changes occur over many thousands , many tens or hundreds of thousands of years? Evolution is about changing to adapt to changing environments and were are at a microscopic stage of the evolution process. We are the fossils of the future.
Klingwood · 61-69, M
@Pikachu yes so magically it just happens when all we really see is how things rust out and die .
Klingwood · 61-69, M
@Pikachu it's better when in the water yes .

@Klingwood
it's better when in the water yes .

And how does the fish to in the trees compared to the monkey?
Klingwood · 61-69, M
@Pikachu so don't follow what you said they are better because they survive that's it
Klingwood · 61-69, M
If evolution does what it does for whatever reason it does it why are so many things extinct
Klingwood · 61-69, M
I believe in evolution but not that it was the start of anything so showing me that it's real will change nothing
@Klingwood

they are better because they survive that's it

Yes, they are better...under a given set of envrionmental pressures.

Monkeys won't thrive under water, fish won't thrive in trees.
Do you understand what i'm saying?
newjaninev2 · 56-60, F
@Klingwood
why are so many things extinct

because they were not successful in propagating their genes in the environment in which they found themselves.

Do you understand that individuals are irrelevant, and that species are irrelevant? All that matters is the replication of genes (that's why your genes made you). The difficulty genes face is that they march backwards into the future... every time a gene is replicated it cannot know the environment in which it will need to replicate, because the environment is constantly changing. Its environment also includes the other genes with which it exists, and constant mixing of genes from sexual reproduction further limits or enhances its chances... it cannot know beforehand how that will play out.

For genes that arrive into an unfavourable environment where their replication is constrained or prevented the sentence is death There is no appeal, and the sentence is carried out immediately.
