There's also something called a 'block party'
ThePatientAnarchist · 61-69
@zonavar68 true. Those can be quite fun.
@zonavar68 There's also something called a "Republican Party." 🤣

@FrogManSometimesLooksBothWays no fun!

At my boarding school, a house party was a party to which you invited girls from another boarding house (as opposed to our more regular birthday parties which were for members of the same house only). They took months of planning and were eagerly anticipated by all. The evening was typically characterised by dancing, loads of food and drink, and heated debate over who was the best Spice Girl. The noise steadily crescendoed until the party broke up, either by the intervention of an irate teacher, or when one of the guests threw up over herself.
I never witnessed anyone getting shot.

I attended many house parties in my youth; no one was ever shot or harmed. The main difference seems to be youth, a rather casual guest list (meaning none—folks just showed up) and no particular agenda besides talking, listening to music and dancing. Occasionally snacks were provided, drinks and such.

@bijouxbroussard thank you. I think that is closest to what I hear about on the radio. Presumably there are a lot of these parties where nobody gets shot!

A "House Party" is when several people have been invited for the weekend, typically for shooting.
Arrive Friday evening, shooting on Saturday, leave on Sunday.
Mostly it is the men who shoot, but not exclusively, some women do. The other wives / girlfriends find plenty of generous hospitality.
It is the pheasants which are shot, (unless there is an accident !).
Yes, quite aristocratic, I know; may include viting other bedrooms.

When I think of a house party, it's bigger. A gathering of people that fills the family room is not a house party. A bigger event that fills the house, is usually catered and/or includes professional entertainment (DJ or live band) ... that is a house party.
ThePatientAnarchist · 61-69
@sarabee1995 I may be wrong but I don't think that is quite how the radio news here uses the term, because they are generally talking about poor people, who probably do not put on parties with professional entertainment and catering.

@ThePatientAnarchist My perception might be skewed by where I grew up. I've been to plenty of house parties that were catered. 🤷♀

The Urban Dictionary and Oxford Dictionary have very different meanings.
I wonder if House Music is a requirement?
Invite everyone the parents are away?
Rave vs A Dinner Party?
500 attendees as opposed to say 20-30?

Well, I don’t think the houses all get together to party.

@ThePatientAnarchist I’ve been wrong before.

I think the music and party favors
ThePatientAnarchist · 61-69
@MyNameIsHurl Like, a "house party" would have more of those?
MyNameIsHurl · 41-45, F
@ThePatientAnarchist yeah, it would have house music and drugs

A house party is like a rave. A party at your/my/their house is much tamer

Kid n Play
ThePatientAnarchist · 61-69
@BillyMack I don't know what that means 🤔
BillyMack · 46-50, M
@ThePatientAnarchist it’s just a movie in the 90s called House Party. Kid n Play were a rap duo that starred in it.
In my experience, the phrase house party usually pops up in the same sentence as sex. 🤣

@FrogManSometimesLooksBothWays Yes, that definition sounds like what I hear about, only it makes the news when the "out of control" extends to violence :(
