What is the difference between a "house party" and a party at someone's house?

If someone invites me to a party, I assume it's going to be at their house (or apartment). But I keep hearing on the news about "house parties" -- usually because someone got shot at one. Is that the distinction -- if someone gets shot at your party, it was a "house party"? Or am I missing something? 🤔

When I think of a house party, it's bigger. A gathering of people that fills the family room is not a house party. A bigger event that fills the house, is usually catered and/or includes professional entertainment (DJ or live band) ... that is a house party.
@sarabee1995 I may be wrong but I don't think that is quite how the radio news here uses the term, because they are generally talking about poor people, who probably do not put on parties with professional entertainment and catering.

@ThePatientAnarchist My perception might be skewed by where I grew up. I've been to plenty of house parties that were catered. 🤷‍♀
