How would you react if you see a person flying a Confederate flag on the 4th of July?

Do you laugh and cringe?

I'd wonder why. My birth country also had a civil war; but after a while they just moved on and forgot about it.

@ffony Do they still have a defeated group claiming the war was based on something it wasn't, that they will rise again? Do they still push their desires, and flag, on the country they tried to destroy? I don't know what country you are in nor why there was a civil war, but in the US those elements are very clear.

@samueltyler2 It was in Britain. I'm not sure whether it should be called a British or an English war: The history, causes & participants were complex. It was mainly about establishing republicanism vs the existing monarchy. The usual religious 'Christian' conflicts may also have played a role. I don't know how long resentment & antagonism persisted afterwards but I don't think it was anything like the 140-odd years you guys have had, to 'get over it.' In Britain it's long-long-forgotten history.

Waving/pushing flags is something I despise in general. What are these 'desires' and 'clear elements' you refer to, that you're unable to negotiate with your fellow countrymen? is it a flag that you're afraid of?

@ffony How about the Irish v Brits, although that is more religious, but that has lasted hundreds of years, the Scot v UK. I don't think the flag part would be similar, but the animosity, probably. The Confederate Battle Flag though, represents the entire secessionist of the civil war, and the major goal was to protect slavery. It would be like a Nazi flag being flashed in front of everyone.

@samueltyler2 If you want to model your country on the Irish vs English situation, go right ahead (but why?)

There has never been a 'Scot vs UK' war.The current arrangement of a Scottish parliament within the United Kingdom seems to work quite well and amicably, considering the history of Scots/Engish conflict. People CAN come to their senses.

@ffony I did not say that I want to model our country on any other country. You raised the issue of long standing animosity. I didn't even bring up so many others, mostly ethnic/religious. It isn't a matter of someone coming to their senses, the US Civil war has been festering ever since the confederates fired the first shot at Ft. Sumter, and not because the victorious union tried to not end the war. The head of the Heritage Foundation stated recently, a warm civil war has already started, he further said that the left will be responsible if the war turns bloody. But, look at the videos from the Jan 6 insurrection, the confederate flags were all over the place.

No. The topic is:

my "reaction to seeing a person flying a Confederate flag on the 4th of July"

My response was and is:

"I'd wonder why. My birth country also had a civil war; but after a while they just moved on and forgot about it."

Anyway, I'm sorry the people of your country are unable to give up their 'festering' civil war. Sounds awful.
