Grave Encounters is good, haven't watched Strange Harvest or Bring Her Back yet, but the trailers looked promising. The really good ones are hard to find, since they've been banned in many places.

I thought Cabin in the Woods was a very smart horror movie with an unexpected ending.
This one is a classic, and offers a few good laughs at the same time

Phantasm part 2 and 3 are great. Skip part 1 its just too slow. There's a recap at the beginning of part 2

Gore gore girls 70s horror
I always go with the classic Universal Studios Monsters, their psychological scares are far more thrilling than modern gorefests.
