Do you ever feel like we are living in “end times”?
A pandemic. Climate change. The deterioration of American democracy. Fraying social norms. Conflict and war. Do you ever feel like we are living in “end times”?
When you look around, do you have hope for the future and are you still hopeful about the future of humanity? Or do you have a sense of “apocalyptic anxiety”? Dr. Miles argues, “This is not the end. This is just a change.” Do you agree? Does her essay make you think differently about the moment we are in? Why or why not?
Why do you think the author turns to Black history, specifically, for lessons about how to face what feels like the end? What do you take away from Rose’s story, or from the stories of other Black Americans, about resiliency, courage, hope and survival? Can you think of any other people or periods in history that demonstrate humans’ ability to persevere, recover and reinvent through societal disruption, moral failure and collapse? What lessons can we take from them about how to live our lives in these challenging times?
Dr. Miles encourages readers to “meet the change ahead by joining together in small acts of mutual humanity, embracing the strategy of gritty hope that Black culture and history make manifest.” What does hope for the future look like to you? What “small acts of mutual humanity” can you commit to in this time of change? I’ve recently turned to Jesus because of talk about the rapture being almost here and stuff but I’ve been having anxiety and some panic attacks about it. There’s so many people on tiktok saying that we are in the last days and this one female tiktoker who I forgot the name of saying that God wrote 2-4 on her forehead in a dream and she’s saying that it’s about the 7 seals and that there happening every 7 months. Also a whole bunch of children talking about the rapture going to happen soon. I would greatly appreciate help to calm me down. Do you believe we are in end times? Do you think you will live to see the day when the Lord comes back?
I’m just curious to see what is the general consensus. I think we are. There’s a lot happening in the world right now that the Bible lays out as leading up to the end. It’s all happening so quickly too. From natural disasters to the wars to the virus etc. Let me know your thoughts.
