Do you think electric cars being mainstream will improve global warming ?

The only reason the climate is changing is we are still exiting the latest ice age. But for the purposes of discussion, IC cars emit hydrocarbons. How will you charge E-cars without hydrocarbons at the generating source?

Please don’t tell me wind or solar. Those sources won’t provide 5% of the necessary electricity.

@redredred I saw a stat the other day that in the province of Alberta, a huge land area, the wind generation output was about 0.036% or rated capacity. There are windfarms all over the province and this province is known for its wind.

@redredred Actually your Wrong
If
One Properly Designs the system to their home and needs
It can Indeed be done
redredred · M
TheDisciplinarian · 61-69, M
@redredred Well..
Clearly You Don't know or understand
hippyjoe1955 · 70-79, M
@TheDisciplinarian and yet it has never been done so.......
TheDisciplinarian · 61-69, M
@hippyjoe1955 You mean..
It's Never been done on Large scale (perhaps)

For...
Todays Homes can be Heated and Cooled
Using Far less Artifcially made energy

One can Capsulate their house in a
"Green house" type surrounding Structure
That alone Dramatically redudes need for
Artifcial heating/cooling

Additionally
One can use Geothermal
Both Deep vertical system
(set up simular to a deep well)
Or a Horizontal set up where piping is laid out some 10-15 feet underground in ones back or front yard

Similarly
One can put piping in a near by pond or lake
(Those lucky enout to have one near by)

Plus
Those with brokes/streams/rivers near by can set up different type of Hydo systems

Plus
There is solar panels
(Some now getting Extremely efficient)

One can use Passive solar to heat the home and or water

Plus
One can use wind
(These too offer a wide and good variety)

There also are cheep ways to make and thus use/burn hydogen ( for home and car )

FYI..one can use multiple examples of above
As required in the area you live in
As well as to better scale round the clock needs
As well as being sure you fully or as best possible fully meet your and families need(s)

Then
You scale up Not simply to cover your home needs..but also what You’ll need for your car(s) as well

Of course the ways ive stated are Easiest
When Building/designing a new home

Though so too
Many of what i mentioned can be retro fitted to existing homes..to 1 degree or another

So Stop Falsely claiming it Can't
Just Admit..for whatever Reason(s) your UnWilling to learn and or do it

@redredred Taking the UK as an example, in the first quarter of 2023, renewables provided 42% of energy. This stuff is improving and growing fast, believe me.
hippyjoe1955 · 70-79, M
@TheDisciplinarian I have a lot more experience with wind than you do. We had a windmill on the farm we used to pump water. It had a gasoline engine for back up for when the wind didn't blow.
TheDisciplinarian · 61-69, M
@hippyjoe1955 ok

Yet Quite a bit different then the Most modern wind machines
Be it the ones looking slightly more like the dutch stilled water wheel windmill

Also..location and hight comes Dramtically to play in the various types of wind units

I like the newest of Vertical wind generators

Solar is good for 3 to 5 hours top production during the day

Wind compliments it when sun is down
Wind is typically heavier
hippyjoe1955 · 70-79, M
@TheDisciplinarian doesn't matter how efficient if the wind doesn't blow or the wind blows too hard no energy is produced. Kind of like the solar panels at night.
TheDisciplinarian · 61-69, M
@hippyjoe1955 I hear you
However
If there is decent average winds
Then so too you can design it properly
To survive Heavy winds

VERTICAL systems are not greatly bothered by high winds
Multi wind generators of low power can take advantage of lite winds

There is a Lot
That can be planed and taken advantage of

Stop knocking
What your unwilling to try and or do
hippyjoe1955 · 70-79, M
@TheDisciplinarian you can not draw a constant energy supply from an extremely variable energy source. Here in Alberta we are constantly in danger of brown outs because the wind suddenly stops blowing. We are often a 4% of rated capacity. You simply can not provide 4.4 million people with the energy they need if your rated capacity and actual output are are such extreme variance. Then there is the simple fact that CO2 does not change the climate. However windmills are an environmental disaster. Millions of birds and bats are killed by them on a yearly basis. Their useful life is about 10 years after which they go into the landfill. That is not even taking into account the energy and environmental destruction that go into making and installing them. Windmills are a disaster.

@TheDisciplinarian Solar in the northeast has been down over fifty percent in the last week due to the environmentalist wacko arsonist who set the Canadian fires. Neither solar nor wind is capable of powering a modern society in part because even trying to approach the necessary battery technology would require rare earths we simply do have.

Like I said, bullshit.
redredred · M
@TheDisciplinarian pipe dreams. Putting a home in a greenhouse reduces the need for cooling? What are you smoking?
TheDisciplinarian · 61-69, M
@redredred you are Quite Ignorant
Perhaps though..you have Not heard or thought of such ways

Mind you
One likely would do this
Design and build it from new

It would be Both very expensive and hard to "RetroFit" a Non Newly made home

@TheDisciplinarian Keep trying, it may keep you out of the bars. solar and wind are non-starters and will be as long as battery technology is as non-performing as it is.
TheDisciplinarian · 61-69, M
@redredred you're Not as smart as you think
I use Solar and wind Quite well
( it was a pain getting needed permits though)
I could Add Geo-thermal ,however the ground beneath me is Mostly bolders and would be quite costly even to do a lower scale horizontal geo-thermal set up.
My solar is ok..could be better..
My wind works very well

Also use solar and wind at my summer home
As well as hydo and geo-thermal

Batteries are a pain, expensive and heavy
redredred · M
@TheDisciplinarian “Okay, could be better” is not a formula for eight billion people in a developed culture. And I’m smart enough not to fall for the crap you’ve swallowed.
