I Am Concerned About Climate Change

I read an article this morning in The New Yorker that suggests that, while it’s still theoretically possible to avert climate change apocalypse, the emphasis is on theoretically. It would basically require all the doubters to immediately have an epiphany and pressure their governments to implement draconian conservation measures, completely unrealistic. So we just need to accept that if you’re younger than 60 there’s a good chance you will see the climate rise 2 degrees Celsius and, because natural disasters will be so commonplace and out of control, civilization as we know it will cease to exist, and if you’re younger than 30 that outcome is all but certain in your lifetime.

So I’m just wondering what all the climate change deniers and their heirs will say then. I mean I guess it will still somehow be progressives’ fault?

Nah, if you really cared about global warming, you'd be trying to convince people and find real solutions instead of virtue signalling pointlessly, spreading the same apocalyptic cult threats we've been hearing for 30 years now, and dismissing people as "climate deniers." You don't view global warming as something to be fixed, you view it as a moral issue you can use to establish your moral virtue.

I’m not scared of government intervention, I actually favor a robust government that protects and empowers its people.
Get off your phone or computer then.
The problem is systemic. It’s not going to be solved by me not using electricity, it would, theoretically, be solved by us finding and converting to cleaner (preferably safe) sources of energy.
Then there’s no reason to do anything.
You’re probably one of those people, aren’t you, who believe the only reason people ever behave morally is because they’re terrified of burning in hell for the rest of eternity?
You just need to be superior to the “deniers”.
Do you feel inferior to the acceptors?

@JP1119
I’m not scared of government intervention, I actually favor a robust government that protects and empowers its people.
That's an oxymoron.
The problem is systemic. It’s not going to be solved by me not using electricity, it would, theoretically, be solved by us finding and converting to cleaner (preferably safe) sources of energy.
Translation: "It's OK when I do it."
You’re probably one of those people, aren’t you, who believe the only reason people ever behave morally is because they’re terrified of burning in hell for the rest of eternity?
Lol, OK, fringe weirdo cultist. If that makes you feel better, go for it.
Do you feel inferior to the acceptors?
"Join the cult, become an 'acceptor', that is your salvation."

See? Instead of discussing the actual issue, or even putting any effort into it beyond regurgitated talking points, you're obsessed with superiority and inferiority. I rest my case. But bonus points for completely avoiding any substantive statements on the topic. Good job. Really.

Turning off notifications now, I've wasted enough brain cells on your pointless bullshit.

@Sicarium It’s not an oxymoron, just because you vote for candidates who say government can’t work, and then when they’re elected they work to make government not work, it doesn’t follow that government can’t work when people believe in it.

I’m sorry you’re too stupid to comprehend how systems work.
Lol, OK, fringe weirdo cultist. If that makes you feel better go for it.
I mean that would be logically coherent. Same principle, our future is already determined so we might as well sin to our hearts’ delight.

Get over yourself, it’s not all about you. I commend you, oh superior one, for discussing the issue in so much depth and coming up with novel solutions beyond regurgitated talking points.

I’m tempted to delete all your cynical, substance-free insults and then block your sorry ass.

I see so many people with kids explicitly doubting climate science and actually do the opposite... Like buy gazguzzling SUVs instead of demanding electric cars and electric public transportation...

I have no kids.... Why should I deny myself comforts and pleasures if the people with a responsibility to their next generations don't????
Doomflower · 36-40, M
@Tracos I'm similar. Like... dude I feel sorry for children and consider it a cruelty to create more people at this point when I am pretty sure I will die a dried out husk in a road warrior wasteland. So I will use plastic straws and I only recycle cans because it pays to get the deposit back. Enjoy myself while it lasts because it's going down hard.
JP1119 · 36-40, M
We all have a responsibility to the coming generations. But what’s done is done. @Tracos
Tracos · 51-55, M
@JP1119 I agree... but if the people who get the most impact dont take their responsibility.. .why should I go above and beyond...
windinhishair · 61-69, M
The next wave of rhetoric will be that we can't change it and that it is actually good to have a warmer earth. Republicans are already starting to say it.
JP1119 · 36-40, M
@windinhishair Well of course it’s not man-made.
windinhishair · 61-69, M
@JP1119 Climate has always changed. The Earth was once a fireball. So anything is therefore acceptable.
Doomflower · 36-40, M
I saw the writing on the wall and gave up a long time ago. The most hopeful future I see is for us to become like the people in Wall-E or Idiocracy.
MrBrownstone · 46-50, M
I like it warmer
MrBrownstone · 46-50, M
@JP1119 I will only be around for about another 40 years so it won’t bother me.
JP1119 · 36-40, M
@MrBrownstone There’s a good chance that will be long enough.
MrBrownstone · 46-50, M
@JP1119 I’ll take my chances
