The only reason for middle names is for parents, to let their kids know they are in deep trouble

I think it's also because people were uncreative back in the day. "Let's see...you're a shepherd, so your last name is Shepherd, and you have one of the 5 socially acceptable male first names....so if we have more than 5 shepherds....uh oh...."
